A Song For The Restless

Side Story 1

Between Worlds
KAITO: There are so many sparkling feelings here today, as ever.
KAITO: Since I have the opportunity, I'll take a peek at one of the SEKAI—
KAITO: Hm? What's this...?
KAITO: It's a fragment of a feeling. But the emotions feel so strong...
KAITO: This could be some kind of fate, so I think I'll get in touch with these feelings.
 ???
KAITO: I'm in...a gym?
KAITO: (Does the owner of these feelings play some kind of sport? Basketball looks the most likely...)
KAITO: Hm...? Footsteps?
Boy: Huff... Huff...!
KAITO: Wait, someone's here?! He's running this way!
Boy: Huff... Huff...!
KAITO: H-Huh...? I thought for sure I'd be found...
Boy: Huff... Huff...!
KAITO: Is he in high school...? It feels like he's absorbed in his running.
KAITO: There's probably no mistake that he's the owner of these feelings.
KAITO: (This is a fragment SEKAI, not a true SEKAI...)
KAITO: (For the owner of the feelings to be here in spite of that...)
KAITO: (Oh! Maybe he accidentally came here through a dream or something?)
Boy: Huff... Huff...!
KAITO: He just keeps running, but...
KAITO: (There's something off about the way he's running. I think he's favoring one leg...)
KAITO: (Still... His expression is so serious it's scary. I don't want to get in his way.)
KAITO: I'll move where it's a bit easier to hide and keep wa—
KAITO: (Ah! I accidentally kicked a ball!)
KAITO: (Oh no, it's rolling toward him... Uh oh, he's looking this way!)
Boy: ...
KAITO: Oh... H-Hello there...
Boy: ...
KAITO: Huh...? Um....
KAITO: There he goes...
KAITO: He was looking this way, but it almost felt like he couldn't see me.
Boy: Hnng... Hnng...!
KAITO: Oh... Now he's doing strength training...
KAITO: (Even if he did come here through a dream, is it okay that he's jumping into the next thing without taking a break first?)
Boy: Hnng... Hnng...!
KAITO: He seems really desperate...
KAITO: (No, it might be more accurate to say his back seems stuck against a wall...)
KAITO: (What is this feeling...?)
KAITO: (Frustration, restlessness... Anxiety, fear...)
KAITO: (There's a mixture of all sorts of feelings, but he doesn't seem to be in too good a place...)
Boy: Huff... Huff...
KAITO: (He looks pretty fatigued. He should probably take a break right about...)
Boy: Huff... Huff...
KAITO: Wait, he's picking up a ball? He can't be...
Boy: Huff...!
KAITO: Now he's practicing his throws?!
Boy: Huff...!
KAITO: (At a high pace, too...)
KAITO: (What's making him so desperate?)
KAITO: (I guess I need to learn more about him and this fragment SEKAI.)
KAITO: (I'll just look around for clues and—)
Boy: Guh...!
KAITO: ...!
KAITO: Hey, are you okay?!

Side Story 2

 ???
Boy: Ah... Guh...!
KAITO: Hey, are you okay?!
KAITO: (He's holding his knee! Could he be inju—)
Boy: Huff... Huff...! Damn it...! The ball...
KAITO: Hey, wait...!
KAITO: I guess he can't see me after all...
Boy: No time... I don't have time...!
KAITO: (The restlessness and anxiety I felt before is getting stronger...)
KAITO: Hey! What is it you're getting so worked up about?
Boy: Argh! I need to make it in time, no matter what...
KAITO: (It's no good. He can't hear me either.)
KAITO: (If I could just understand his feelings a bit better, that might help me get started on a solution...)
KAITO: Wah! Wh-What was that?
KAITO: This is a fragment of a feeling...
KAITO: I see. His feelings got stronger and came spilling out.
KAITO: (I may be able to get in touch with his feelings through this fragment.)
KAITO: (To tell the truth, I was hoping to speak with him and get it in his own words... Sorry, I'll be taking a look.)

Boy: My bad, this is the worst timing...
Teammate A: Don't apologize, idiot. This isn't your fault...
Teammate B: He's right, Captain! If you hadn't made that play, we never woulda made our comeback!
Boy: ...
Teammate C: Nobuyuki... We'll be waiting for you on the court.
Teammate D: Believe in us! We'll be waiting 'cause we believe in you!
Boy: Got it... I'll be back for sure. Until then, I'm leaving the team to you.
Mother: I'm sorry, Doctor... Could you repeat that...?
Doctor: He will be able to play basketball again...as a hobby. But it may prove very difficult for him to reach the level where he can handle intensive play in competition.
Boy: ...
Boy: It'll just be difficult, not impossible, right?
Boy: What do I need to do to get back on the court?
KAITO: I see... This is so he can keep the promise he made his teammates...
KAITO: (It sounded like he's their captain as well... He must feel a great sense of responsibility, and the fact he got injured would only add to that.)
KAITO: (On top of it all, there isn't even an easy way for him to return to the court...)
Boy: Huff... Huff...!
Boy: I know those guys, and I know they'll win the next match too. So I also need to... I need to hurry up and get back to them...
KAITO: I think that might be a bit too much to carry all on your own.
KAITO: Times like these are when we've got to step in.
KAITO: ♪————...
KAITO: (It's an important promise with your treasured teammates. Of course you want to keep it.)
KAITO: (I'm sure it was a huge shock to hear that it'd be difficult to play like you used to...)
KAITO: (Even so, you chose to fight without ever giving up.)
KAITO: ♪————...!
KAITO: (Your feelings are just that strong. Believe in yourself more, there's no need to rush and overdo things.)
KAITO: ♪————! ♪————~~!
KAITO: (Believe like your friends, who trust that you'll return.)
KAITO: ♪————! ♪————~~!
KAITO: (Please. Let this get through...!)
Boy: Is this...music?
KAITO: I'm glad... It seems I got through.
Boy: Huh...? Um, who are you...?
KAITO: Here, have a seat before we talk. Come on, ball down!
Boy: Oh... No, I need to practice...
KAITO: Your knee hurts, right? You'll end up putting extra weight on your good leg if you practice like that, and wouldn't that just lead to bad form?
Boy: Well...
KAITO: If you get where I'm coming from, then it's time for a break!
KAITO: Don't you think it'd upset your friends who are waiting for you if they knew you were pushing yourself so hard?
Boy: Yeah...you're right...
KAITO: Sorry about this. I just suddenly showed up and started lecturing you.
Boy: Oh, no... To be honest, I knew what I was doing was wrong.
Boy: But I can't stop the anxiety... When I'm in the hospital bed, I feel like I just can't sit still. Even though I know now isn't the time to be practicing like this...
Boy: It feels like I could be spending my time practicing and get back on the court sooner that way, so I worry that I'll be too late if I don't practice...
KAITO: (I see... This fragment SEKAI must have come about because his feelings of wanting to practice and return to the court are so strong right now.)
KAITO: In that case, how about listening to a song that can help alleviate your anxiety?
Boy: Huh...? A song...?
KAITO: Songs can get close to the hearts of all different kinds of people.
KAITO: Some give courage to those who want courage, and others soothe those faced with anxiety.
KAITO: If you don't mind, I can sing you a song. I know a lot of good ones.
Boy: Oh... By the way, who...are you?
KAITO: Oh dear. It seems I'd forgotten to tell you my name.
KAITO: I'm KAITO. Capital K-A-I-T-O.
Boy: KAITO?
KAITO: I believe there's one in your world as well.
KAITO: KAITO, the VIRTUAL SINGER. He communicates feelings through song.
KAITO: Oh... I wanted to keep talking for a bit longer, but it seems about time to say goodbye.
KAITO: See you later, Nobuyuki. I hope you won't forget what we just talked about.
Boy: My name, how did you...?!
KAITO: Hehe. I'll be by your side watching, so don't push yourself too hard.
Hospital Room
Boy: Mmh...
Nurse: Nobuyuki! What a relief...!
Boy: Wait... My practice...
Nurse: You know you can't be slipping out of your room like that! What are you going to do if you trip and make your injury worse?
Nurse: If you hold tight for just a bit longer, you'll be able to start your rehabilitation. For now, you need to rest.
Nurse: And I'm sure it'd upset your teammates who come in to visit you if they knew you were pushing yourself so hard.
Boy: O-Okay...
Boy: *Sigh* I got another talking to...
