Side Story 1

Lunch break
Kamiyama High School - Class 2-A
An: Yes, it's finally lunchtime! I'm starved!
An: Oh, Kusanagi, wanna have lunch toge—
Nene: ...
An: (Oh, she's really focused on that notebook on her desk... Is it the screenplay for our film...?)
An: (Maybe something's giving her trouble...)
An: Kusanagi! Is something wrong? You look concerned.
Nene: Oh, Shiraishi... So, um... I was just working on the screenplay for our film...
Nene: But I'm having trouble hammering out all the little details behind the hero's personality.
An: His personality...?
An: (I don't know much about screenwriting, but it still doesn't feel right having her do all the work...)
An: Then, wanna try thinking about that together?
Nene: Huh?
An: I don't know much about this stuff, but I'm sure we'll be able to come up with some good ideas if we put our heads together!
Nene: Oh...
Nene: I agree. Thanks, Shiraishi. I was pretty stuck, so if you don't mind brainstorming with me...
An: Okay! The hero's a cook, right?
Nene: Yeah. The plot involves him fighting against a bunch of baddies to protect a girl who's trying to deliver food to her sick mom.
An: Yeah, okay...
An: People who fight to protect others usually have a strong sense of justice, right?
Nene: Yeah, there's that... But he'd still be missing something...
Nene: He's a cook, so I wanna make him feel more like a real one, you know?
Nene: Which is where I got stuck. What does that even mean?
An: More like a real cook, huh...?

An: If it were up to me, I'd want him to sound mature and have a strong sense of will...!
Nene: Really?
An: Yeah. Someone who's always there for you. The type of person you can really count on!
An: Oh, but that's not the only thing! He takes his craft really seriously and doesn't compromise on it...
An: Like one of those baristas who inspect each bean before turning them into coffee! He cares about the little details, and that's what makes his food so delicious.
Nene: I see. He's someone you can count on... He takes cooking more seriously than anyone, and doesn't compromise on it...
An: Yup! So, for example...
An: "I'm a cook. Each grain of salt I use must be perfect." Something like that?
Nene: Hehe. Yeah, okay. But I'd like to make him sound a little more impassioned if possible.
An: More impassioned?
Nene: Yeah, uhh... Because everyone in this class is really talkative and outgoing...
Nene: I feel that a character who says what he's thinking in a straightforward manner would make it easier for our lead.
An: Oh, good point...!
An: Alright, more emotion...
An: "My purpose in life is to make the best food I can for the people who need it!"
An: "I'll have no choice but to toss you lot into my cauldron along with those ingredients if you refuse to yield!" How's that...?
Nene: A cauldron...? He's starting to sound more like a witch than a cook.
An: Haha. True.
Nene: Still...
An: Kusanagi...?
Nene: Having him say what he's really feeling straight out like that might make him sound cooler...
Nene: Actually, in that case...
An: (Sounds like a good idea just popped into her head...)
An: (I'm glad what I said helped her out a little.)
An & Nene: Oh...
An: What?! Lunch is over already?!
Nene: I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to take up so much of your time...
An: No, that's totally okay! I was the one who asked first.
An: Still, what to do about lunch... Maybe I can just eat while using a textbook as a blind like the boys do.
Nene: A-Are you sure you want to...? What if something gets stuck in your throat?
An: Oh... Good point...
An: Wait a second... Why don't we just eat after class is over?
Nene: Huh?
An: We won't have much time, but I wanna have lunch with you! What do you say?
Nene: Y-Yeah, okay...
An: Awesome! That's a promise, okay?!

Side Story 2

Street SEKAI
Crase Cafe
MEIKO: Okay, here you are. It's still hot, so be careful.
Len: Thanks! What's a movie without popcorn, right?!
Rin: Len, hurry!
Akito: Do I really need to be here for this screening...?
Luka: Oh, quit acting all embarrassed! You're the lead, so you should sit and be proud of your work♪
KAITO: An, the projector's ready to go!
An: Okay! Then, let's start while all the food's still warm!
An: Today's screening of "The Wandering Cook: A Post-Apocalyptic Tale of Gourmet Martial Arts" begins... Now!
Narrator: "Far in the future... A series of disasters has led humanity to the brink of extinction..."
Girl: "Huff... Huff... I'm almost home..."
Rin: Look, it's An!
An: (Hehe... I thought my heart was gonna explode when we showed this at the gym.)
An: (It was the first time having so many people see my face up on the big screen like that.)
An: (But I feel a lot better about it now after hearing them say the film was really good...)

Wandering Cook: "I'm just a humble cook..."
Len: Cool...! Akito's got some serious acting chops!
MEIKO: And the stunts look so real. You can hardly tell that they're using a double.

Girl: "Mom..."
An: (Oh, this is my big scene...)
Girl: "I want things to be like they were before... I want to see you smiling again..."
An: (I sing a song in the hopes that my mom's sickness goes away...)
Girl: "♪............——"
Girl: "♪———— ♪————"
Miku: Wow... This singing is...

Narrator: "And so, the Wandering Cook resumed his journey to help those in need of good food."
Narrator: "He would venture back into the wastes, but a figure kept watching over him. The girl as she awaited his return."
Girl: "Goodbye, Mr. Cook."
Luka: I was so staggered during the climax, Akito! Was that you doing all your own stunts?!
KAITO: That part when you got surrounded felt so real! I couldn't believe what I was seeing!
Akito: Well, I'm glad you all enjoyed it.
Miku: An even sang a wonderful song. I was so surprised at first since it wasn't anything like what you normally sing.
MEIKO: I agree. It was like I was hearing that girl sing instead of you, An.
An: R-Really?! Then, mission accomplished!
Luka: Congratulations, An! I didn't know you had this sort of talent!
An: Haha! I really appreciate the compliments!
An: But I have to say... That was only possible because of our amazing director.
Kohane: The director? Oh, you mean Kusanagi...?
An: Yeah! She gave me so many awesome pointers for singing while acting.
An: She taught me how to stay in character while singing, and helped me figure out what the girl should be feeling during the song.
An: Also... She showed me how she'd sing that song if she were playing the girl.

Nene: ————♪
An: So, based on her example, I tried singing that song as best I could.
An: I really didn't know what it meant to sing in character at first... But trying something new ended up being so much fun.
MEIKO: I see... She certainly sounds like a wonderful director.
Rin: I'm so happy for you, An!
An: Thanks!
An: *Sigh* Shooting our own film was so awesome! I really wanna make another one together sometime.
Akito: Without me as the lead next time...
Miku: Hehe. But I'm so glad this ended up becoming such a wonderful memory for you two.
An: Me too!
