Coloring SEKAI

Side Story 1

Empty SEKAI
Lake
Rin: Oh...
Ena: Thanks for waiting, Rin. I brought those pencils and sketchbooks I said I'd bring the other day.
Rin: Okay... But how exactly do you do still-life drawings?
Ena: Umm... Actually, Rin, can you guess what that involves?
Rin: Drawing what you see.
Ena: Exactly. Your goal is to carefully observe your model and capture its shape, texture and such in your drawing.
Ena: However, Rin, you'll just be doing a sketch now and coloring it in later.
Ena: Your sketch will turn out better if you make sure not to press down too hard with your pencils or make the lines too thick.
Rin: Okay, I'll be careful...
Ena: In any case, actually drawing is the best way to learn, so let's get started.
Ena: Feel free to ask me any questions you have. I'll try to give you whatever advice I can while drawing alongside you.
Ena: So, let's begin with your overall composition.
Rin: I know what that is... You're always trying to fix your drawings because of it.
Ena: That's because I keep thinking it'll make my drawings look better if I do. But I always obsess over it too much and end up torturing myself instead.
Rin: Then, this isn't as hard as you make it seem?
Ena: Hmm... I think that depends on who you ask...
Ena: For now, why don't we decide what's going to be at the very center of your drawing?
Rin: The very center?
Ena: Yeah, whatever's gonna sit in the middle. The thing you want to draw the most.
Rin: The thing I want to draw the most...?
Rin: Then, the door...
Ena: Really? Sounds good. Next, what sort of angle do you wanna draw the door from.
Ena: You could look at it straight on, from the left or from the right... It could look drastically different depending on which angle you choose.
Rin: Hmm... I think I wanna include some of the stepping stones leading up to it.
Ena: Okay. Then, why don't we try walking around to find a good angle that includes them?
Ena: You could also go a little further by considering the height from which you draw.
Rin: There's so much to think about...
Ena: This is like the bare minimum. Anyway, if you don't hurry, I'm gonna find the better spot.
Rin: No, that's not happening...

The next day
Rin: Oh... I drew it too big again...
Rin: Things in the distance need to be smaller...
Miku: How's your drawing coming along, Rin...?
Rin: So, I've drawn the lake... But I'm having trouble with the things sticking out of it.
Rin: I redrew them over and over. My paper's a mess now...
Len: But the ones on the right look really good...
Rin: ...
Rin: Miku, Len, wanna try drawing something...?
Miku: Us?
Len: Wow... Thanks, Rin!

Rin: ...
Luka: ...
Rin: Luka, move...

Rin: Phew... My second one's finished.
Rin: It looks a lot better than the one I drew with Ena.
Rin: Still, the things up close and far away look kinda funny...
Rin: I should practice some more. I still have plenty of pages left in this sketchbook...
Rin: I wonder if Ena also thinks about this stuff while working on her drawings...
Rin: Is that why she always looks so serious or like she's in pain...?
Rin: (Ena cares a lot more about what she draws compared to me.)
Rin: (But I think I understand how she feels a little better now...)
Rin: I'll try drawing a third one.

Side Story 2

Empty SEKAI
Lake
Rin: Oh, Ena, you came.
Len: With Mizuki. I didn't know you'd both be coming.
Mizuki: Yeah, I decided to help out since I just happened to have some free time on my hands.
Ena: I thought you were here to poke fun at our mistakes?
Mizuki: Haha! I'd say about half and half!
Mizuki: Anyway, I heard that Rin was doing a drawing of the lake. Are you guys also working on something, Miku, Len?
Miku: We've just been coloring in the drawings Rin's been making...
Ena: You drew a lot in the end, right? How many in total?
Rin: Four...
Ena: Wow, that is a lot. I just handed you that sketchbook the other day too.
Mizuki: Based on Ena's reaction, you must've been working really hard, Rin!
Rin: Not really... It's not like I had anything else to do.
Len: Yeah, but Rin... Are you sure about us having these sketches?
Rin: Yeah... I've kept my practice ones separate from the ones I'm really working on. It just seemed like a shame to toss them...
Len: I see... Then, we'll do our best to color them in.
Ena: By the way, I have a suggestion. Wanna hear it?
Rin: A suggestion?
Ena: Yeah. This place is basically all gray, right?
Ena: It's hard to make the colors distinguishable when you have barely any to work with. So I say anyone who wants to, should be free to do whatever.
Len: So... We can color the sky blue and stuff?
Miku: I'd like to try drawing some flowers...
Miku: Would you mind if we did, Rin...?
Rin: Go for it. Show me when you're done...
Len & Miku: Okay...
Rin: I'll color things as they are, Ena...
Ena: Okay. I'll teach you what I can.
Mizuki: Then, Ena, you help Rin. I'll lend Miku and Len a hand.
Ena: You'd do that? Alright, I really appreciate it.
Mizuki: Okay! Let's start coloring!

Len: Mizuki, how does this shade of blue look to you for the sky...?
Mizuki: Oh, that looks good! It feels like a nice, warm sky in the spring.
Miku: Thank you for letting me borrow your phone, Mizuki. I'll try drawing this flower...
Mizuki: Alright, lemme see.
Ena: Color where there's light hitting the object, but leave places where light's reflecting off blank... It's perfectly okay to leave certain spots white.
Rin: Where the light hits... Which spots are those exactly?
Ena: For example, with the beams sticking out of the ground...

Ena: Alright, we'll go on three. One, two, three!
Len: Oh, Miku, you have a flower floating in your lake...!
Rin: Your sky is blue and has clouds in it, Len.
Miku: Your drawing's amazing, Rin... The beams and lake are all the right colors...
Len: She's right... It's like a photo.
Rin: You're exaggerating.
Rin: This beam's bent. The things that are up close and far away still look funny...
Ena: Still, aren't you glad that you managed to finish it?
Ena: That's what impresses me the most.
Rin: Really...?
Rin: Ena...
Rin: That was fun... Thanks.
Ena: You're welcome.
