Teacher
Let's see... I think that's everything I needed to tell you all today... Umm...
Teacher
But I feel like I'm forgetting something. What was it...?
Student
Please remember!
*Students Laughing*
Teacher
Yes, I remember! I was forgetting something.
Teacher
Ahem... The city will be holding a new event this year centering around its local students.
Teacher
Its official title is the "Shibuya City High Schools Joint Festival".
Teacher
Put simply, it's an attempt to get all the high schools in Shibuya to put on a festival together.
Teacher
The details are still getting hashed out, but it should involve collaborating with students from the other schools to put on stage performances, as well as making or researching things to present at booths.
Student
What kinds of performances? Like dancing and stuff?
Teacher
From what I understand, the students are free to decide that for themselves.
Teacher
Now, here's where you all need to listen.
Teacher
Each school is being asked to send a few students to serve on the planning committee.
Teacher
Yes. Since the goal is to have students from different schools in Shibuya interact, they want the students to plan and run everything.
Teacher
So, if you're interested, please feel free to volunteer. I also plan on asking a few of you after this.
Teacher
Anyway, that concludes today's homeroom. Get home safe, everyone.
*Students Chattering*
Student
It sounds like a fun festival... But Shibuya City High Schools Joint Festival's a mouthful. What if we called it "Shibu Schools Fest"?!
Student
I'm actually thinking about volunteering!
Student
Then, go say that you wanna!
Student
Huh? Actually, I dunno... Maybe I should just participate normally instead...
Nene
(It's also happening before we're supposed to start training with the Morinomiya Revue, so I might try to participate if I can fit it into my schedule.)
*Footsteps*
Teacher
Kusanagi, do you have a minute to talk?
Teacher
About the planning committee I just mentioned.
Teacher
Would you like to be a part of it?
Teacher
Yes. Remember how good a job you did of leading everyone for the arts festival?
Teacher
Which is why the other teachers and I thought that you'd be the perfect person to ask.
Nene
(The planning committee... I am a little interested, but I still have my regular practice to think of...)
Nene
(Students from the other schools are going to be on it too, which means I'd be working with complete strangers.)
Teacher
If you don't feel comfortable, then it's okay. I know this is very sudden.
Teacher
But if you're even the slightest bit interested, then I'd like you to take up this opportunity.
Nene
(This is just like the arts festival... It could be another opportunity for me to create something with lots of different people.)
Teacher
Are you sure?
Nene
Yes. I am a little scared... But if it means learning more about how shows are produced, the I'd like to do it!
Teacher
Thank you. I'll let the other teachers know. Also, feel free to ask if you need any help.

Planning Committee Member
No way! Really?! I'm also in brass band! What instrument do you play?
Planning Committee Member
Oh, I didn't know there was a shop like that so close to my school!
Planning Committee Member
Haha. Your teacher sounds fun.
Nene
(Wh-Whoa... There's like fifty people here, and they've all formed their little groups already.)
Planning Committee Member
Huh? We have another person.
Planning Committee Member
Hey, you're right.
*Footsteps*
Planning Committee Member
Yeah, nice to meet you!
Planning Committee Member
Come sit next to me. This seat's open.
Planning Committee Member
Hehe. We're all in the same year, so let's keep things informal. Let's do our best together!
Planning Committee Chair
Everyone, can I have your attention?
Planning Committee Chair
I know it's a little early, but I'd like to begin our first meeting since everyone seems to be here now.
Planning Committee Chair
My name is Shiina, and I'm the student council president at Miyamasuzaka Girls Academy. My school has been asked to lead this year's event, which means I'll be serving as the chair. I look forward to working with all of you.
*Applause*
Planning Committee Chair
First, I'll be explaining what our work is going to involve...
Nene
(This festival is basically divided into two parts. The stage performances and all the exhibits.)
Nene
(So, I'd like to help with the stage performances. Helping with them should give me some good experience...)
Planning Committee Chair
Alright, please make your choices now. You'll all be talking with your groups once things have settled.
*Crowd Chattering*
*Footsteps*
Stage Leader
You're all here to help with the stage performances, yes? If so, let's start talking about what we'll be doing.
Stage Leader
First, this joint festival involves two different stages.
Stage Leader
One is the "Club Activities Stage". That's where the brass bands, choruses, film clubs and such from each school will be performing and presenting.
Stage Leader
We'll mostly be running support for them, by preparing anything they need and organizing places to practice.
Stage Leader
Then, we have the other one... The "Planning Committee Performance Stage".
Stage Leader
The members of the planning committee are being asked to come up with their own performance and be a part of it.
Stage Leader
In simple terms, it's meant to be something we can create on our own, without having to be a part of any clubs and such.
Stage Leader
Again, we'll mostly be supporting the clubs with their performances. But for this, we're being asked to plan and run everything ourselves.
Stage Leader
Anyway, I'd like to immediately get down to nuts and bolts, but...
Stage Leader
We're still in talks with the advisors for the clubs at each school, so we don't know which are going to be participating yet.
Stage Leader
So today, I'd like for us to start discussing what we'll be doing for our own performance.
Stage Leader
Any ideas?
Stage Leader
Yes, but we won't be able to do anything that involves special equipment or skills, since we want as many people as possible to participate.
Planning Committee Member
Right. Which means musical instruments are out. No bands or orchestras.
Planning Committee Member
Then, what about a chorus?
Planning Committee Member
Hmm... What if one of the schools sends over a chorus? We might want to avoid doing the same thing as someone else.
Planning Committee Member
Yeah, true! This is harder than I thought.
Nene
(But everyone's good at different things... What kind of performance would allow us to work as one and make use of our talents?)
KAITO
It's true, musicals involve more than simply acting. There's singing, dancing, art... Quite a lot goes into them.
Nene
Exactly. The theatre clubs apparently do regular plays for the most part, so we shouldn't overlap with their stage performances either.
Nene
Oh, yeah... Everyone sorta said that they wanted someone who knew how to handle things, and that just happened to be me.
Nene
Thanks. But aren't you guys gonna be busy, Tsukasa? You have to prepare for your own performances.
Rui
Yes, Tsukasa and Emu will be performing as actors, while I'll be working as a director. But I'm sure we'll be able to lend a hand with whatever you might need.
Nene
I really appreciate it. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to successfully juggle writing a script and recruiting people, all while practicing.
Nene
Yeah. I learned a lot when I wrote the screenplay for the film we made for the arts festival, so I wanted to try doing it again.
Nene
Oh, actually... We know roughly what we're going to do as the planning committee, but we still haven't figured out any specifics. Mind helping me brainstorm?
Nene
So far... We want to include a variety of songs from a mix of genres in order to let a lot of people participate.
KAITO
Yes, that should make it easier to include the different songs you want, and let you adjust the script to suit your actors too.
Emu
Oh, then... What if the protagonist learned to love music by becoming friends with those musicians?!

Airi
Also, sorry if I startled you. You didn't move after the walk light turned green, so I was wondering if everything was okay.
Nene
Yes. The other planning committee members helped me make posters to put up, but I'm still having a hard time recruiting...
Airi
Then, let's exchange contact info! I'll tell anyone who agrees to help how to get a hold of you...
Nene
So... Do you remember the show we did on top of that mountain for New Year's? You seemed to have a lot of fun while dancing, and your ad-libbing was perfect...
Airi
Yeah. I'll have to check with Haruka, the others and our manager, but I should be able to pencil it into my schedule. We're actually a little free right now.
Airi
The story of a girl who's encouraged by her musician friends to take steps towards making her dream come true.
*Footsteps*
Nene
...which is why I'd like you two to join the cast of our show. What do you two think, Shiraishi, Shinonome?
An
I'd been thinking about it already, actually. Singing with kids from the other schools sounds super fun!
Akito
Anyway, I'm gonna have to pass. But let me know if there's anything else I can do to help. These kinds of things always involve some kind of manual labor, right?
Nene
Oh, in that case, would you mind helping us move stuff the day of? We're still a bit shorthanded there...
Nene
(Some of my classmates have already agreed to help design costumes and the set, which just leaves...)
Toya
It's going to be my first time writing songs for a musical, but it'll be good experience for me to broaden my skillset.
Mizuki
Absolutely! These kinds of costumes always include a bunch of frills and lace, so designing them should be a blast!

Nene
Thank you all for your time. I know this probably felt like an eternity, but we've covered the actors, composers, band, art team, lighting and costume groups' tasks.

Costume Designer
This is such a great story! I can't wait to start designing the costumes for it!
Set Designer
How do you guys wanna design the set?
Nene
Thank you all again for agreeing to help on such short notice. I know I sorta invited you out of the blue.
Saki
What she said! We have to do our absolute best, after Airi went out of her way to tell us about this!
Honami
Hehe. I agree. But I am a little nervous. This is pretty different from what we normally do...
Nene
Hoshino's going to be acting, Tenma's writing songs, Mochizuki's on set design, and you're going to be in the band, Hinomori...
Honami
Emu invited me. Also, a person from one of the other schools already volunteered to play the drums...
Honami
*Nod* They said official school events are fine, so there's no need for you to worry about us.
*Footsteps*
Shizuku
Unfortunately, Haruka and Minori won't be joining us. They're scheduled to work right when we'll be preparing for it...

Nene
I'm looking forward to working with all of you, and I promise to do my best to make this show a good one!
Nene
(We have a cast, songwriters, a band, set and costume designers now. There's a ton of things to keep track of...)

Nene
Actually, before we do... I should probably introduce myself again. My name is Nene Kusanagi. I'm the leader of both this show and this cast, and I'm looking forward to working with all of you.
Nene
First, we'll go over the story, and then decide roles. After that, time permitting, we'll try to squeeze in a quick table read.
Nene
The director and actors from the troupe I'm in will be assisting me with deciding your roles. So, can you guys introduce yourselves?
Emu
Hi! I'm Emu Otori! I really want this show to make everyone smile, and I look forward to working with all of you!
Tsukasa
My name is Tsukasa Tenma, and I too am a third-year at Kamiyama High School! That's Tenma, written as "soaring pegasus"—
Tsukasa
What?! But you told us to introduce ourselves! However, I understand we must use our limited time to its best advantage...
Tsukasa
In any case, let's all do our best to make this show a spectacular one! I look forward to working with all of you!
*Applause*
Nene
This story's titled "A Dream On A Melody". The protagonist is named Lulu, and she lives in the biggest mansion in town.
Nene
Lulu is a sheltered girl, who doesn't know much about the world outside her mansion. But one day, she hears someone singing from the window, and decides to sneak out into town.
Nene
The musicians teach Lulu how to sing, and she begins sneaking into town without the butler's permission to go sing and hear the others perform.
Nene
As time goes on, she becomes friends with the other musicians, and she starts dreaming of becoming a musician who can make everyone smile.
Nene
The musicians all gather outside of her mansion and begin singing. Through their performances, they tell each other how they feel about her and this situation.
Nene
They fill Lulu with so much courage that she decides to tell everyone in the mansion about her dream...
Rui
However, that's going to be difficult this time around. Most of you have no acting experience, after all.
Rui
So, for this show, I thought that we could try assigning you all roles which match your personalities.
Rui
Yes, since that should make it much easier for all of you to follow your characters' feelings and ways of thinking.
Rui
So, we'll need you all to introduce yourselves, and tell us about your feelings regarding singing.
Nene
Yes, because this story involves instilling joy, inspiring bravery and encouraging others to move forward through the power of singing.
Nene
So, knowing how you personally feel about singing should make it easier for us to assign roles to all of you.
Ichika
I'm currently the vocalist for our band... My goal is to sing and perform in a way which allows me to reach the hearts of many different people.
An
I'm An Shiraishi, and I'm a second-year at Kamiyama High School! My goal is to sing and stand on top of the world!
An
My partner, teammates and I are gonna accomplish that by pushing each other to keep getting better!
Airi
And singing obviously means a lot to me, since it's my best tool for spreading hope to everyone!
Cast Member
Yes, I'm...!
An
Are you sure? Since we're here, I kinda want to hear what your feelings are regarding singing, Kusanagi!
Airi
Me too. Also, don't say you're just gonna play whatever's left. You should also play the role that suits you the best.
Cast Member
A world-class musical actress? That's so cool...!
Cast Member
Does that mean you wanna sing on Broadway?
Rui
Starting with the show's most vital role. I'd like to begin by choosing who is going to play our protagonist...
Airi
Yeah, you and she do seem to sync up pretty well, in terms of having the courage to chase after such big dreams.
Cast Member
I agree with them! Plus, it'll be nice having a veteran leading the way, you know?
Cast Member
I also vote for you!
Rui
However, you're also busy as a member of the planning committee, so juggling both roles won't be easy.
Rui
Which is why I'm going to leave it up to you. Keep in mind that we have a few other suitable candidates.
Nene
(And it's true, I did feel some kinship with her, with the way my friends gave me the push I needed to start really going after my dream...)
Tsukasa
Considering that this is the first time on stage for many of you, you're projecting your voices incredibly well! I'd like for you all to bring the same energy next time!
Cast Member
Okay!
Nene
Alright, we're just about out of time. That concludes today's practice. Thank you all for coming.
Everyone
Thank you!
An
You two were also perfect, Airi, Ichika! I loved how you played the musician who inspires courage in her, and the musician who shows her how fun music is!
Airi
Hehe. Who would've guessed that we'd all be playing musicians? It's a big responsibility, but let's all do our best!

Planning Committee Member
So, we'll need you all to write these eight songs for this show.
Planning Committee Member
Yes, one for each musician that's going to appear in this show.
Toya
I see... The songs should feel drastically different from one another, because each musician has their own distinct style.
Nene
That's why I'd like you to come up with something with a rock feel for Hoshino, pop for Momoi and street for Shiraishi.
Ichika
Writing songs for all these different genres won't be easy, but it should also be very rewarding.
Nene
Still, Hoshino, are you sure about this? You're already playing a character, and you want to work on writing songs too...?
Ichika
Yes. Given the song count, I feel like Saki and them are going to need help. Also, if possible, I'd like to write the song I'm going to sing.
Planning Committee Member
I'm the leader of the songwriting team, so let me know if you ever need any help.

Nene
(Some of them start from the chords, some from the melody... Everyone's style is different. I'm having fun just watching them...)
Planning Committee Member
Wait, already?
Toya
Yes, but it's still very rough. I need someone to tell me if it goes with the character's concept.
Toya
Of course. I'd appreciate it if you all gave me your honest opinion. Anyway, I'll play it now...
*Tap*
Ichika
Yeah... You can feel how reserved the protagonist is, and how dreary it is being stuck in her mansion all day. This is incredible...!
Toya
I may be able to figure out what's missing if I know what she's going to feel when she sings this song.
Nene
Like Hoshino said just now, Lulu's a very reserved and shy girl, especially due to the fact that she's been stuck in her mansion for so long.
Nene
Because of that, she's developed a fascination for the world outside her window. Unfortunately, she's always been too scared to go out.
*Tap*
Saki
That's amazing, Toya! It only took you a second to figure out how Lulu feels and add it to the song!
Ichika
Yeah...! The part you just added is such a beautiful expression of her desire to experience new things... It's crystal clear.
Planning Committee Member
Okay, thank you!
Saki
Alright! We can't let Toya hog all the glory! Let's write songs that send shivers down Nene's spine!
Ichika
Right. Would you mind telling us a little more about the characters we're working on, Kusanagi?
KAITO
I agree! I think it's particularly cool how the leadup to the chorus builds up and become more rhythmical!
Kanade
No, that's okay. We like listening to songs that others have made, and I'm really glad we could help.

Nakanishi
I'm sorry!
Sugawara
Understood.
Band Member
Okay!
Luka
<Yes. She's playing with a slightly different type of band compared to normal, one which includes saxophones and trumpets...>
Shiho
(Okay, the rhythm section is playing more in sync now. And the wind instruments are sounding good.)
Nakanishi
Oh, I'm sorry... Did I rush ahead again?
Band Member
Wait, really?
Shiho
We all have our own styles, so it'd be nice to pick a lead and stick with them in terms of accentuating, extending or cutting our notes.
Shiho
(A song's feel can change a lot depending on how the notes are handled. But for this one, who can we have...?)
*Door Opening*
Planning Committee Member
Pardon me. I'm here to see how you're all doing.
Shiho
Yeah, we're doing better than I expected. But I'm a little lost on how we should play this song.
Shiho
The one where the protagonist sneaks out to go see the town... Can you tell us what sorts of emotions we should be trying to express here?
Nene
This is when she discovers just how much she loves music after meeting the musicians, so it'd be great if you could express how happy and excited she is.
Shiho
Then, we should try to add a bit of a spring. Follow Sugawara's lead, shorter sounds with a bit of emphasis.
Band Member
Okay!
Shiho
You guys on the trumpets sound a little choppy compared to everyone else. Conversely, guitars, you've got natural sustain, so you need to let go of the strings earlier—
Band Member
Y-Yeah, you may be right, but do we really have to be that picky about this?
Shiho
Our songwriters put a huge amount of effort into these songs, so I want to give them the respect they deserve.
Shiho
After all, we only get one chance to play them together like this. If there's anything at all we can do, I want to do it. No regrets.
Band Member
Hinomori...
Band Member
You're right... These kinds of opportunities don't come around often, so we should give it our best shot.

You've done a wonderful job of capturing the feeling of a town where musicians are able to sing and play whatever songs they like. I can feel freedom and excitement in the air.
*Brush Stroke*
Ena
We could have musical notes and five-line staves floating in the air like this. What do you think?

Hinomori, Akiyama, I've finished putting in the basting stiches for the protagonist's dress. Can you two tell me what you think?
*Rustle*
Shizuku
Yes, I also think it looks wonderful. The subdued color gives it an air of sophistication. Kusanagi's going to look so good in it.
Tachibana
You think so? Thank goodness! I went for a classy design because I knew the director would look awesome in it!
Tachibana
Yeah! I was also a costume designer for that, but I didn't get to make anything for her that time. So, I'm really glad that I do for this show.
Shizuku
So, Tachibana, I was thinking about embroidering her hair ribbon. Can we talk a little later about what sort of design would be best?
*Door Sliding*
Tachibana
Oh, Kusanagi! The costumes are coming along really nicely!
Tachibana
Nice timing! We just finished putting in the basting stitches for your dress, so can you come try it on for us?
Tachibana
Yes, we need to see if it fits properly. Also, I really wanna see you in it!
Tachibana
So, without further ado... Let's head to the next classroom over♪

In terms of the actor's height and build... Akiyama, can you lend me a hand?
Kamiyama High Student
No, wait... You don't like wearing these kinds of clothes, right?
Mizuki
No, that's totally fine! I just really like cute clothes is all. I don't have a problem with cool clothes. Thanks though!

Okay, that's good to hear!

What I just said also applies to the other teams. They've all done their absolute best for this show.
Nene
It can't have been easy, since a lot of them are doing a musical for the first time, but they practiced and persevered...

Band Member
I'm scared. What if we miss our cue to start playing? We might end up confusing the cast...

Cast Member
Huh?
Airi
Have confidence in the all the hard work you've put in until now. As long as you play the way you practiced, this show's gonna be absolutely awesome!
Tsukasa
I know that for a fact, since I've been with you all since day one! You've all become wonderful actors!
An
In other words, instead of feeling scared or worried, we should be telling ourselves that we're gonna succeed, right?!

Airi
That isn't limited to just today. Right from the start, you went out of your way to talk to all of us and did everything you could to make this show a success.
Ena
She's right. We were able to come up with the perfect background designs because you took the time to come see us and give us advice.
