How to Spend New Year's Eve

Side Story 1

Ichika's Room
Ichika: This one...! No, it's the joker!
Saki: Yay! Third place is mine this time!
Honami: Hehe. That makes Shiho the winner of this round.
Ichika: *Sigh*... Your poker face is way too good, Shiho.
Shiho: No, you're just having a hard time hiding what you're thinking. To be fair, you've always been like this.
Rin: <Hey!! You girls having a fun New Year's Eve?!>
Miku: <Rin... You really shouldn't jump out and startle people like that.>
Ichika: Hey, you guys came. Welcome.
Shiho: Hm? Where are Len and KAITO?
MEIKO: <Those two said that they didn't want to intrude on our all-girls party. They should be playing something together right now.>
Luka: <But they did say that they'd pop in for the shrine visit.>
Saki: That's understandable... It would be more fun with them here, but an all-girls party it is!
Rin: <Yeah☆>
Ichika: Oh, but we won't really be able to play cards together... We may want to choose something better...
Shiho: Sure, but is there anything that we can all play...
Honami: How about this? "The Great Animal Race - Dog Edition"...
Saki: A board game? Sounds fun! What are the rules?
Honami: Hehe. Alright, I'll start explaining!
Honami: We each play a dog that's trying to collect as many treats as it can. You'll work your way towards the goal by ideally landing on as many treat spaces as possible.
Honami: Normally, the person who gets there first wins, but the winner here is determined by which dog has the most treats.
Rin: <I think I get it! So just collect as many treats as we can, right?>
Ichika: That means it's best to roll ones and twos if we are going to try to land on all these treat spaces...
Honami: Yes, but reaching the goal before your opponents can also yield some bonus treats.
Luka: <Ah, that makes things interesting. We won't really know who wins until it's all over.>
Miku: <Yeah... Hm? Is each piece designed differently...?>
Honami: Hehe. As it happens, each piece represents a different breed.
Shiho: Oh, you're right. I see a Corgi, a Beagle... And a Siberian Husky.
Saki: Whoa! They're so cute!
Honami: Which breed will also play an important role throughout the game. For instance, some spaces give certain breeds an advantage while disadvantaging others.
Shiho: I see. Whoever made this must've put a ton of thought into it.
Honami: But since this is our first time, why don't we all just pick a breed we like?
Ichika: Yeah!
Honami: Hmm... How are we all going for pieces?
Saki: Rin and I are the Corgi! I love how its bottom looks like a fluffy loaf of bread♪
Rin: <And its big ears just add to its cuteness♪>
Shiho: MEIKO and I will be the Siberian Husky.
MEIKO: <This one looks like it means business.>
Luka: <I'm having a hard time saying no to this Beagle. It looks so cute, but also very smart.>
Ichika: I agree. I love how droopy its ears are too.
Miku: <How about the Shiba...?>
Luka: <Ah, an excellent choice... The perfect mix of astuteness and affection.>
MEIKO: <I agree. Just like you, Miku.>
Rin: <A Shiba Miku for Miku-P☆>
Miku: <What in the world is a Shiba Miku...?>
Honami: Hehe. Aren't Shibas the cutest? I own one, so I can't get enough of them.
Honami: We seem to be choosing breeds in pairs, so why don't we play in teams of two this time...? The team with the highest total will be the winner.
Saki: Okay! Let's do our best, Rin!
Rin: <Yeah! There's nowhere but the top for us, Sakki!>
Ichika: Alright, let's get the dice out and... Hold on, I didn't realize how many different kinds of spaces are on this board.
Shiho: Hm? What do the ones with dogs drawn on them mean?
Honami: Oh, those are lucky spaces. You get two treats if you happen to be the right breed.
Honami: Also, if you land on one of these card squares, you'll have to draw a card and do whatever it says.
MEIKO: <Interesting. I'd like to see what these cards have in store for us!>
Honami: One second... Here you are!
MEIKO: <Let's see... "Look! A Tunnel! All breeds besides Huskies move forward two spaces"... Oh, because Huskies are too big!>
Shiho: Was choosing a Husky a bad choice...?
Honami: No, not necessarily. Some cards and spaces give bigger breeds an advantage.
Shiho: Okay, that's good to know.
Ichika: Oh, you should see this card. "Bark like your dog's piece until your next turn."
Miku: <Oh... I'd rather not draw that one...>
Saki: Oh, I know! Since this game's all about treats, why don't we give ourselves some treats to eat each time we land on one of these spaces?
Shiho: Sure. That means I'll have to eat everything you brought today, Saki.
Saki: What...?! No way! Not happening!
Honami: Hehe. Alright, let's get started with those rules included!

Shiho: Oh, it's a card space. Let's see... "There's a big fence that only Huskies can jump over. Move forward two spaces if you're a Husky."
MEIKO: <Yay! Nice draw, Shiho!>
Ichika: Alright, we're up next... Oh, a dog space! We got a treat, Luka.
Miku: <That means it's our turn now. We landed on a card space. Would you mind drawing for us, Honami?>
Honami: Sure... Huh?! B-But...
Miku: <Oh no...! "Bark like your dog's piece until your next turn"...!>
Shiho: That means you two have to bark like a Shiba until your next turn...
Rin: <Awesome! Alright, Miku, let's hear it♪>
Saki: Yay! We get to hear Hona and Miku bark like dogs!
Miku: <I-I'm so sorry, Honami...>
Honami: I-It's okay, Miku! We'll get through this!

Side Story 2

Ichika's Room
Shiho: Anyone want any juice?
Honami: W-Woof...!
Saki: More juice! You got it♪
Luka: <Oh, it's getting pretty late. Isn't it past your bedtime, Miku?>
Miku: <G-Grr...!>
Rin: <Okay, we get it!! You can stay up, Miku-P!!>
MEIKO: <Lay off, you two. That's bordering on bullying, you know?>
Luka: <I'm sorry. I couldn't help it. They're just so adorable like this.>
MEIKO: <As long as you understand... Anyway, I'm next. Mind rolling for me, Shiho?>
Shiho: Sure. It's a four, which means you have to draw a card. Let's see what it says...
Shiho: Oh...
Rin: <What's it say? What does she have to do?>
Shiho: Quick conference... MEIKO, about this card...
MEIKO: <Hm...? Oh, I see. I was under the impression that barking was a penalty this whole time. I wasn't expecting this...>
Ichika: What does that mean?
MEIKO: <So... Sorry, Honami, Miku.>
Shiho: Alright, we have some questions for you two.
Shiho: Which of these snacks is your favorite, Honami? I'll point to them one at a time, so let us know when... Potato chips, popcorn...
Honami: <W-Woof...!>
MEIKO: <Okay, Miku, you're next. Do you usually play the guitar, Miku?>
Miku: <W-Woof...>
Shiho: Last question. Is it embarrassing to have to bark like a dog?
Honami & Miku: <Woof!>
Shiho: Cool, we did it...!
MEIKO: <Sorry, you two... We get three treats, right, Shiho?>
Saki: Huh? Why?
Ichika: Mind showing us the card you just drew? Okay, um...
Ichika: "Earn three treats by making someone bark three times within thirty seconds." Now it all makes sense...
Saki: Whoa! There's a card like that!
Rin: <She's right! Does that mean there are more of those?>
Miku: <Fortunately, we only had to bark for a turn, so that's all done and over with.>
Rin: <Darn...! That sounded like a great way to get some extra treats!>
Thirty minutes later
Shiho: Alright, we made it to the goal. Pretty sure that we won too.
MEIKO: <We even got five extra treats for reaching it first.>
Miku: <A comeback seems pretty tough at this point.>
Saki: Nonsense! We have tons of treats!
Rin: <Yeah! All we need is a card or something that can give us a boost...!>
Saki: Okay, I rolled a three... We're on a card space! C'mon, give us something good! Please!
Rin: <No, it's back! "Bark like your dog's piece until your next turn"...!>
Saki: What?!
Len: <Hey, isn't it about time we headed over to the shrine? We were hoping that...>
Rin: <Woof! Woof! Woof!>
Saki: Grr...!
KAITO: <Uh... What's going on here...?>
Honami: Oh, um... This is Canine Saki and Rin!
Len: <O-Okay...?>
Ichika: Sorry about this...

Shiho: I'm all set to go.
Saki: *Sigh* I was really hoping that you and MEIKO would have to bark like dogs too, Shiho...
Shiho: Yeah, yeah. Maybe next time.
Rin: <But it was still super duper fun♪ We should have Len and KAITO play next time!>
Luka: <Then, why don't we have them bring it over to SEKAI so we can all play?>
Rin: <Yeah!>
Honami: Hehe...
Honami: (I was worried that a board game wouldn't be quite what they were hoping for, but I'm really glad they liked it so much.)
Honami: (It was a wonderful way to cap off the year.)
Ichika: Honami, let's go!
Honami: Yes, let's!
