The Courage I've Mustered

Side Story 1

Lunch break
Miyamasuzaka Girls Academy
Saki: Wow, another fun and talk-filled day!
Ichika: You got so caught up in talking that you forgot to each your lunch and had to scarf it down at the end.
Honami: Hehe. It was so cute too. You were like a little squirrel.
Shiho: Yeah, I didn't realize a human could fit so much into their cheeks.
Saki: Heehee!
Shiho: I wasn't really praising you.
Ichika & Honami: Hehe.
Ichika: Anyway, Honami, see you after school.
Honami: Okay!
Class 1-B
Honami: (Let's see... Next we have... Hm?)
Honami's Classmate: *Sigh*
Honami: ...
Honami: You've looked a bit down lately. Did something happen?
Honami's Classmate: Oh, Mochizuki...
Honami: Would you mind telling me what's bothering you?
Honami's Classmate: ...
Honami's Classmate: I've loved the sea and fish for as long as I can remember. So much so that I sort of want to do something related for a living.
Honami: Sure...
Honami's Classmate: And when we went to the Seaside School, I got to meet someone who teaches marine biology at a university.
Honami's Classmate: After asking them all about what they do, my desire to become a researcher like them only grew stronger...
Honami's Classmate: But when I mentioned that to my mom, she told me that I should find a better job with more stable pay...
Honami: Is it tough to keep food on the table as a researcher?
Honami's Classmate: Not if you work for a lab at a school or company... However, in order for that to happen, you have to go to graduate school and produce good research...
Honami's Classmate: And in terms of the marine biology research I want to do, I have a feeling that finding a lab where I can work is going to be very difficult...
Honami: I see...
Honami's Classmate: My mom had to work really hard when she was young, so I'm guessing she doesn't want me to go through what she did...
Honami's Classmate: She even added, “It doesn't have to be you,” and, “It doesn't sound like meaningful research, so I wouldn't bother.”
Honami: What...? That's not true at all...!
Honami's Classmate: Thank you, Mochizuki...
Honami's Classmate: I've been thinking about it a lot lately and can't get myself to talk more about this with my mom. Not only that, I'm too scared that the teacher's going to say the same thing...
Honami's Classmate: But I'm really glad... You seem to really understand how I feel, Mochizuki.
Honami: What...?
Honami's Classmate: You and your childhood friends are in a band and trying to go pro together, right? I was sure that you'd be willing to hear me out since you're also chasing after a big dream...
Honami: ...
Honami's Classmate: Oh, that's the bell... Again, thank you for your time...
Honami: Wait! If it's alright with you, can we talk again...?
Honami's Classmate: What...?
Honami: I don't know if I can do anything to help, but I feel like things won't get any better if we don't act...
Honami's Classmate: Mochizuki... Sure, I really appreciate it...
School SEKAI
Honami: I'm not seeing Miku or the others anywhere. I guess it is very late...
Honami: ...
Honami: (And we ended up having to wait until tomorrow to talk after not being able to find time today...)
Honami's Classmate: She even added, “It doesn't have to be you,” and, “It doesn't sound like meaningful research, so I wouldn't bother.”
Honami: (What can I do to help...?)
Honami: (It's going to affect her future, so I have to tread carefully...)
Honami: (And despite how uncomfortable she feels about it, I believe she should talk to her mom or the teacher...)
Honami: ...
Honami: (I asked to help without thinking much about it... Am I really up to this task?)
Honami: (Did I do something I shouldn't have again...?)
Honami: I was hoping that some stargazing would help me come up with some ideas... If only things were so easy...
Honami: Huh? Did something flash just now...?
Honami: Oh, there's something rolling around over there.
Honami: Is this...? A ball...?
Honami: Huh?! Wh-What?! So bright...!
MEIKO: Ah, who could that be visiting this place so late at night?
Len: Hm? There's no one here.
MEIKO: There isn't? That's strange...
Miku: I thought I just sensed someone coming here, but I may've just been imagining things...
 ???
Honami: Hm...?
Honami: I-Is this a jungle...?!
Honami: But I was on the rooftop of the school in SEKAI just now! How did I end up here...?!
Honami: Wait, if I stop Untitled...!
Honami: N-No, where's my phone...?! I could've sworn that I put it in my pocket.
Honami: Does this mean...? Am I stuck here...?
Honami: Eep...!
Honami: ...
Honami: I-Is somebody there...?
Honami: Miku...? Luka...?
Honami: MEIKO...? Rin...? KAITO...? Len...?
Honami: Ichika...?
Honami: Saki...?
Honami: Shiho...?
Honami: ...
Honami: What do I do...?

Side Story 2

 ???
Honami: (Seriously, where am I...?)
Honami: (My phone's gone... Maybe I dropped it somewhere close by...?)
Honami: (Hmm... These glowing plants are very pretty, but kind of scary at the same time... I should probably avoid touching them...)
Honami: Hm? What's this? A piece of paper...? No, it feels like leather...
Honami: Oh, there's a small star mark in the center.
Honami: Could this be some kind of map? Does this star represent the exit?
Honami: But there aren't any paths or landmarks... I don't even know where I am right now...
Honami: ...
Honami: (And I'll just get lost if I start walking around without a plan...)
Honami: (I even remember hearing how it's better to just stay put when you lose your way on a mountain.)
Honami: (Ichika and the others may come and find me if I wait here...)
Honami: (Tomorrow, once they realize that I'm not at school, they should figure out that...)

Honami: ...
Honami: No... That's not the solution... Mom, Ichika, everyone... They're going to be so worried...
Honami: (And...)
Honami's Classmate: But I'm really glad... You seem to really understand how I feel, Mochizuki.
Honami: (I promised to talk to her tomorrow.)
Honami: I have to find a way back.
Honami: I should put something on the ground to remind myself that this is my starting point.
Honami: In terms of paths... I should see if some animals made any... I don't have much to go on right now, but that should lower my chances of getting lost...
Honami: Alright...
Honami: Oh, I'm seeing signs of animals having passed this way... I can start by following this little trail...

Honami: (I can't even see where I started now...)
Honami: (And the star on this map-like drawing is still puzzling me... Hm?)
Honami: Wait, a line's been drawn in the lower lefthand corner. This wasn't here before...
Honami: Oh, is there where I've walked...? If so, I should be able to find my way toward the star!
Honami: (There's no guarantee that the star is where the exit is, but I feel much more hopeful now.)

Honami: Phew... My surroundings still look more or less the same, but I'm making progress toward where the star is...
Honami: Just a little more to go...
Someone's Voice: ...mi.
Honami: ...!
Someone's Voice: Ho...mi...
Honami: A voice? Is someone calling for me...?
Honami: Could it be Ichika and the others...?!

Honami: (I've moved away from the star a little bit... But that person's voice was definitely coming from somewhere around here...)
Someone's Voice: “Seriously, Honami's such a bootlicker.”
Honami: What...?
Someone's Voice: “She always just smiles and nods while listening to someone's problems.”
Honami: Wh-What are these voices...? Where are they coming from...?
Someone's Voice: “She makes people feel like they owe her so much while feeling all high and mighty. What a phony.”
Honami: N-No, that wasn't what I was...
Someone's Voice: “Then, what are you gonna tell that girl tomorrow? How you think her dream's so wonderful? How you're gonna help her out so much?”
Honami: W-Wait...
Someone's Voice: “You can't do anything.” “And yet, you're this nosey.”
Someone's Voice: “Can't you see that nobody wants your phony kindness?”
Honami: ...!
Junior High School Classmate: Whose side are you on?
Honami: *Sob*
Honami: I... I just...
???: Hey! Where are you...?!
Honami: ...!
???: Honami!
???: Honami! Say something if you can hear us!
Honami: That voice... Len? MEIKO and Miku too...?
Honami: Is it really them...? Did they come looking for me...?
Honami: ...
Honami: (Calm down...)
Honami: (I'm not the old me anymore.)
Len: But it sounds like you already know what you want to do, Honami. You genuinely want to be there for Shiho, right?
Miku: I can at least say that I don't think resolve and commitment aren't things you can learn about from others.
MEIKO: What do you think it means to be kind, Honami?
Honami: I don't care if nobody wants my kindness...
Someone's Voice: “...!”
Honami: I appreciate the fact that others are willing to open up to me about their problems, but that's not why I'm kind to them.
Honami: I'm kind to them because I just can't leave them be...
Honami: I know that I can't always actually help them, but I can at least encourage them by letting them know that I'm there for support!
Honami: That's why I'm going to show my kindness to my classmate once more by talking with her tomorrow!

School SEKAI
Honami: Hm...? W-Wait... I'm back on the rooftop...?
Miku: Honami...!
Honami: Wah! M-Miku?!
Miku: Are you okay? You're not hurt, are you?!
Len: Relax, Miku... As far as I can tell, she's perfectly fine.
MEIKO: He's right. Also, I'm sure Honami's still confused regarding what just happened.

Honami: So, that “fragment of a feeling” sent me to a different SEKAI...?
MEIKO: Yes. However, I was surprised to hear that you were sent into a jungle. I wonder whose feelings those were.
Len: On top of it all, you vanished and left only your phone behind.
Miku: But even if you had it with you, fragments act as the entrances to their respective SEKAI, so you wouldn't have been able to use Untitled to get back.
Miku: Anyway, here's your phone.
Honami: Thank you, Miku. You too, MEIKO, Len...
Honami: (If they hadn't come looking for me, I probably would've stayed stuck in that place...)
Honami: Thank you for coming to find me... Thank you all so very much...
Len: It was no big deal.
MEIKO: Exactly. We're just glad to see that you're safe.
The next day
Miyamasuzaka Girls Academy - Class 1-B
Honami's Classmate: Good morning, Mochizuki...
Honami: Oh, good morning.
Honami's Classmate: I need to apologize about yesterday. You probably weren't expecting me to dump the story of my life on you like that...
Honami: No, I'm really glad that you did.
Honami: And I thought about it quite a lot...
Honami: First, I think you need to take a hard look at what you're feeling.
Honami's Classmate: What I'm feeling...?
Honami: It's something one of my bandmates said a little while back.
Honami: We're trying to go pro, so we can't be happy with just being in a band together.
Honami: We have to be prepared to fully commit ourselves to our music.
Honami's Classmate: Commit...?
Honami: Yes...
Honami: That's why I'd like you to ask yourself again to see if you truly want to become a marine biologist.
Honami: And, even if it means butting heads with your mom, whether you will be able to pursue your dream without relenting or having any regrets.
Honami's Classmate: ...
Honami's Classmate: Right... Because it isn't easy to make your dream a reality.
Honami: Take me for instance. I'm reminded of just how far I still need to go each time our band plays a show.
Honami's Classmate: I see...
Honami's Classmate: Thank you, Mochizuki. I'll take a step back and think about what I actually want to do.
Honami: Okay.
Honami's Classmate: Um... If it's alright with you, I'd like it if we could talk more again sometime...
Honami: Of course. I promise to support you until you find the answer.
Honami's Classmate: R-Really?
Honami: Yes. I mean, that's what classmates and friends are for, right?
Honami's Classmate: Mochizuki... Thank you so much...!
